Main Objectives of the Project

The long-term goal of the 'Climate for Change' project was to contribute to a well-balanced participation of women and men in decision making processes relevant to climate protection and, in particular, in local climate protection policies.

Today, in technically dominated fields such as energy, transportation and buildings, women are clearly underrepresented. Since these fields are central to climate protection, gender specific aspects and the effects of climate policy are not taken into consideration.

With the aim to develop a balanced participation of women, the first step was to analyse the structures which have prevented their participation up to now. Furthermore, current instruments for supporting women applied in a wide range of thematic areas were evaluated to see whether they have brought successful results, whether they should be developed further, or whether there is a need for new instruments and methods.

In particular, the work packages of the 'Climate for Change' project were:

- Conduct a current analysis of the conditions related to the participation of women within formal and informal decision making in the area of climate protection.

- Work through and expand the methods and instruments to improve the current situation, while taking into consideration the conditions and experiences in different European countries.

- Sensitise the members accountable for municipal decision making in the area of climate change to the issue of having a balanced participation of women.

- Initiate a discussion process and create supporting material for this process.

- Strengthen the contribution of city-to-city networks which focus on changing structures offering equal chances within the local authorities.
