Malmö (Sweden)

Malmö is the commercial centre of southern Sweden and an international city. This is expressed, not least, by the fact that Malmö has 265.000 residents who speak some 100 languages and belong to 164 different nationalities.

Malmö - a city in transition
Malmö is also undergoing a transition from being an industrial city to a city of knowledge. Older industries have been replaced by investments in new technology and training programmes of high calibre. Malmö University, which opened in 1998, is Sweden's latest venture in the field of higher education, accommodating some 15.000 students.

The strongest sectors in Malmö are logistics, retail and wholesale trade, construction, and property. There are also a number of well-known companies within biotechnology and medical technology, environmental technology, IT, and digital media fields. Co-operation between colleges, science parks, and companies provides a sound basis for entrepreneurs and creative development in Malmö.

An exceptionally well developed infrastructure makes Malmö very easy to reach, whatever means of transport you use to get here: boat, plane, train or car. Malmö has an international harbour and the airports Kastrup and Sturup are only half an hour's journey from the centre of Malmö. The motorway reaches right into the city centre and Malmö has excellent rail connections with the rest of Sweden and Europe.

The City of Malmö is enhancing an attractive business environment and a dynamic business community in Malmö.

Experiences in the field of climate protection
The City of Malmö plays an active role in the process of reducing green house gas emissions. The biggest source of these emissions is traffic which accounts for 45% of the emissions in Malmö. The goal for the City of Malmö is to reduce the local emissions by 25% until 2005 and by 50% until 2050 with 1995 as base year. Until 2000 the city succeeded to reduce emissions by 9%.

The City of Malmö is one of 12 municipalities in a national climate network which committed itself to an active role in the local climate work. In addition to goals regarding a decrease within private and public sector, the City of Malmö participates in the national campaign for climate protection in order to raise awareness for climate effects. Recently we received money from the climate investment programme - a large national investment programme that supports local initiatives, - which will be spent according to a local strategy and analysis to yield the biggest reduction of green house gas emissions. Several of these projects regard information and education.

KlimatX is a current project; it is a workshop based on experiments where school classes are able to learn more about climate effects. This has been a success and has drawn a lot of attention on the national level. Other projects targets transport as well as energy. At the housing exhibition Bo01 energy issues were highly prioritised and a concept was developed that the electricity for the whole area comes from 100% renewable sources. In most of our energy projects we work together with Sydkraft; one of the biggest energy suppliers in the south of Sweden.

At the City of Malmö´s Environment Department the Environmental Strategy Unit is working actively with Agenda 21. We support small local initiatives and work with information measures to rise awareness among the inhabitants of Malmö.

Experiences in the field of gender equality
The City of Malmö has a gender equality policy which is used by all departments. In addition most departments have their own equality plan which addresses problems and issues specific to the individual conditions. The plan of The Environment Department includes a goal built on the health and safety policy which aims to obtain equality between colleagues irrespective of sex. Gender issues are taken up in monthly meetings and training and education workshop for the entire Department are being held once a year.

For the University of Malmö gender equality is one out of four main perspectives – the other tree being environment, health and integration. The City of Malmö makes a joint effort with the University of Malmö to work with sustainable urban development and we experienced that they are a valuable resource and reliable partner in projects like this.
