Founded over 2,500 years ago by Greek settlers, Naples became a prestigious city under the Roman Empire, and then the capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in the 18th century. Its historic centre possesses an artistic heritage that is unique in the world. The capital of the Campania region and of the province of Naples, the city is located in an urban zone with more than 3 million residents: it is the third largest Italian city and the largest in southern Italy, a commercial harbour, industrial and touristic centre.

The Council of Naples employs 13.520 employees in gender:
women 3234 (30%), men 10286 (70%)

 

Under way activities of gender equality service:

- Setting up of a publication "Guide to the gender equality"- vademecum about gender equality’s rules, services offered by Municipality of Naples. This book has been distributed to all women’s employees of the board.

- The inception of European experimentation of a new programme of reconciliation (private and public spaces),

- Research on conditions of women’s workers in the Municipality of Naples: the methodology is mainly based on the administration of questionnaires to women’s employees in the board. Its objective is to test a new flexible working time schema aiming to harmonise career and family.

- Formal resolution to set up Gender Mainstreaming.

 

Under way activities of climate protection policies:

Since 1987 the department for the environment of Naples is involved in an environmental policy characterised by a "step by step" approach. Among the activities can be quoted:

- Blue label campaign: car maintenance and engine emission control

- Parking policy, improvement of local public transport, and pedestrian areas

- Environmental Sunday: "In town without my car!"

- Information campaign about motor cycle maintenance and engine emission control

- Maintenance and inspection campaign for heating equipment

- Economic incentives to buy electric vehicles

- Commuter mobility management for sustainable transport

- Policy of Energy Efficiency and the use of renewable resources
